The Escalation Die represents a heightened awareness and/or control in close quarters combat. The concept in 13th Age is nice, but it applies to an entire encounter there. Usually, melee combatants are focused less on the entire engagement and more on their immediate surroundings, i.e. those they are presently engaged with.
Here, the escalation die advances for each round a character remains in melee combat with opponents. For instance, a Rogue gets better at evading attacks and landing precise strikes as their engagement escalates while a Fighter would be better at controlling opponents in melee. A Barbarian would exchange the Rage ability for a Rage-like escalation die, doing more damage and being more resistant to damage with escalating combat. Spellcasters in melee
